FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
While the Internet provides a wealth of knowledge and examples for us to look at, it doesn’t provide personalized instruction and direct feedback to help you. A YouTube video can’t see where you may be stumbling, and give you the instruction you need in realtime to overcome the obstacles you’re facing to become accomplished at this skillset.
Oftentimes those who try to “go it on their own” or are “self-taught” end up ingraining bad habits that are very, VERY hard to break later on. This results in more work to undo these bad habits, more frustration, and sadly it can lead to a higher chance of giving up on something that could be extremely rewarding.
Private instruction accelerates your progression & learning, gets you to your goals more quickly, and is the single best investment you can make for your personal development.
Lessons are $80 an hour, and we recommend either weekly or bi-weekly for frequency.
Lessons are for students who wish to learn the joys of DJing simply for their own enjoyment. The Training Program is for students that wish to learn how to DJ well enough to call themselves “professional DJs”, and have the skills to compete for paid opportunities.
Lessons are a set price per session, and are open to anyone.
The training program has an application & interview along with a flat fee to take you from a bedroom DJ to a professional DJ.
This is NOT to say that a student taking lessons won’t get to a professional skill level eventually, but the “lessons” path is a more “at your own pace” approach. The training path is more structured, and more intense with the intent of preparing a DJ to have the opportunities to get paid work – potentially with SoundFire DJ!
Our training program is a regimented “DJ Boot Camp” that takes place over a 3 month period.
We meet weekly for lessons, have practice assignments, and focus on the technical side of DJing. The goal is to empower you with the skills to master the instrument that is your turntables/CDJs/Controller as quickly as possible while learning theory on programming, beat matching, blending, mixing in key, basic scratching techniques, and more!
Think you’re up for the challenge? The crazy thing is the training program could be absolutely FREE!
Up front, the training program is $1,500. Now, you might be thinking, “but the lessons over 3 months is $960, right?” That’s correct, but you don’t get the same intensity of instruction from the lessons, or the opportunity to get your money back. Hear me out a little more:
After you successfully complete the training program – and if you take a little longer than 3 months, don’t worry, we’ll still work with you up to 5 months if that’s what it takes – you’ll be given an opportunity to work with us at SoundFire DJ. After you successfully complete 10 events with us, not only will you get paid well for each event successfully completed, but you will get your $1,500 back in the form of a bonus, along with an offer to continue working with us in the future. It’s a WIN-WIN-WIN!!
Students for both lessons and the training program need to have the following:
- Your own computing device (i.e. tablet or laptop that has the capability to interface with DJ hardware) with either Serato DJ, Rekordbox DJ, Virtual DJ, or Algoriddim DJay installed.
- Your own DJ hardware (i.e. Controller, CDJs, or turntables) Get in touch for a list of recommended DJ hardware for beginners.
- Your own music library or subscription to a legitimate music source. For our “lessons” students you may use any of the streaming services your DJ software interfaces with to get started.
- For “Training Program” students you will need a service such as Beatport, or choose from a list we will provide to you if you are accepted into the program.
- You will need a speaker of some kind eventually – something portable like a Bose S1 Pro, but we can provide this as you’re starting out if you let us know.
- A pair of decent headphones. We are happy to provide recommendations upon request.
- A desire to learn how to DJ!!
